Find out about conserving documents - tips

The National Archives has one of the largest conservation departments in the UK.

We asked Angela, who heads up the book conservation section, have you got any tips for our readers on preserving, say, a family bible?

Yes, keep your book:

  • away from sunlight and heaters
  • in a stable environment at a fixed point between 16 and 19 degrees centigrade
  • at a Relative Humidity (RH) at a fixed point between 45% to 60% RH.
  • Avoid rapid changes in temperature and humidity
  • For a conservator contact the Institute of Paper Conservators info@ipc.org.uk or National Preservation Office.
