Imperial War Museum (IWM)
The Imperial War Museum (IWM) is part of your family’s history. Established in 1917 to commemorate and record the First World War, it has always received genealogical enquiries. The Museum now covers all aspects of twentieth century conflict from 1914, and is not just confined to the military actions of both World Wars. It has material relating to the home front, and good coverage of the Commonwealth (and enemy) forces.
The Imperial War Museum website
has useful information for the family history researcher, including factsheets on tracing your ancestors in the different armed forces.
The United Kingdom National Inventory of War Memorials records all war memorials throughout the UK. They range from crosses and statues to bus shelters, sundials, park benches and even an island. You can search the National Inventory of War Memorials database online
